Prairie Scraps and Barn Raising

Prairie Window Box

Aunt Sarah's Scrap Baskets

"How much piecin' a quilt is like livin' a life! You can give the same kind of pieces to two persons, and one will make a nine-patch and one'll make a wild goose chase,  and there will be two quilts made out of the same kind of pieces, and jest as different as they can be. And that is jest the way with livin'. The Lord sends us the pieces, but we cut them out and put 'em together pretty much to suit ourselves, and there's a heap more in the cuttin' out and the sewin' than there is in the caliker."   From:  Aunt Jane of Kentucky, by Eliza Calvert Hall

Scrappy Little Log Cabin

This week I will be giving away one free copy to a lucky quilter. Please leave a comment here on my blog and tell me what it is about quilting or small quilts that inspires you the most. Make sure you leave your name and a way I can contact you to let you know you've won. I'll pick a winner at random on Friday, July 13. One entry, please!

If you don't win, you can always buy a signed copy from me here

I love antique quilts and would love to make one of each but who has room for all those quilts. But I can make all the antique quilts I love in miniature.
My smallest quilt so far was 5x7” and the pattern was tumbler. I loved doing it and love it still.
I love your books and so glad you love miniatures like I love miniatures.

Thank you Kathleen for this giveaway. Quilts give an overpowering feeling of happiness in the choosing and sewing and living with their warmth. Small quilts are just as happy and a bed size too. We all get a closeness to our ancestors. Jan Wilkinson mystuff@wilkinsonranch.com

Your new book will be inspirational, from the small quilts I've seen on your blog. I have a large stash of Civil War fabrics, and would love to have some new patterns and inspiration to use them. Thank you, Kathy, for all you do to promote a wonderfully satisfying and useful pastime.

I enjoy making something beautiful from what would probably normally be thrown away--scraps or small leftover pieces of fabrics.

What I like making quilts is just that making quilts. I love the fabric, putting the needle and thread through the fabric and making the stitches. I do like sewing on a machine, but hand stitching is my favorite.

I find that choosing the fabrics is the hardest thing in my quilt making. I love to make small quilts, because if the fabrics don’t go together visually, I haven’t spent a lot it time constructing it. I would LOVEto win this book!

I love decorating with quilts. Using smaller quilts give me the opportunity to use multiple quilts in one area. Besides, they are just darn cute!!

Hi Ms.Tracy,
You have created a wonderfully creative book! What I love about your small quilts is the adaptability. They can be as scrappy as I want them to be. I especially like their smaller size because they make wonderful wall collages that draw my quests' attention. Winning your new book would be a real treat but beyond that meeting you and hearing your stories was the best.

I love anything quilting related. My favorite thing is choosing fabrics that go together and putting them into small quilts. I have learned many things from reading your blog. I enjoy it very much.

I’ve loved fabric for more years than I know. My favorite thing was fabric shopping with my mother and just felling the top quality of the fabric hand. Quilting and quilts are the same way for me. Now we call it “petting” the fabric or quilt. I love making timeless beautiful quilts large or small. Your books and quilts are timeless beauties too. Thanks.

I love making little quilts because they can be completed in a fairly short time and are a nice boost for that instant satisfaction factor. I make a fair amount of medium to large, complicated quilts. So doing a small piece is a nice change of pace and always great way to play with your scraps too! Win, win, I say!

I love to try out the patterns and color combinations in small quilts. They are quicker to make and easier to hang. Love the SmallQuiltTalk Community! Thanks for a chance to win the book! paulinefisher@verizon.net

I love making small quilts as I can get them done quicker and I can quilt them on my machine and do not have to send them out to be quilted.

Hi Kathy! The best part of small quilts is choose fabrics from your leftovers stash. Sitting on the floor with all the scraps around your legs and find the perfect combination... I love it!!!!!

I love the simplicity of small quilts. They can be just as challenging as a regular quilt, just not as much fabric. I just bought your other book, Small &Scrappy....love love the quilts in it. I use small quilts all over my home and change them throughout the year. I love that you hand quilt them and look forward to trying that on the quilt I’ve chosen from your book...thanks for the inspiration.

Making small quilts has become my passion. I love that I can carry a small quilt anywhere to work on the hand quilting. I decorate with them all over my home. They are in baskets, hanging on walls, and on tables. This small quilt group saved me when I moved to a small town away from family and dear friends. I felt like I took a lot of my best friends to my new home with me. I will forever be grateful to you,Kathy, for that.

Small quilts can just fit in anywhere - on a side table,in the bottom of a basket, rolled up with other smalls in a basket, on a cupboard shelf with part of it hanging over or just in any small empty place! The possibilities are endless and just make you want to make another one as soon as you finish the one you're working on. And they make great gifts - if you can bear to part with one.

Little ones get done so much quicker, and can be a practice in what goes best together... contrast is important … or is it low contrast... playing with colors is so FUN!

What I love most about quilting is that there is no end to learning. Playing with color is next. I simply can't get enough of it all.

I love making small quilts because it lets me try new patterns and styles of quilting that I would never attempt if I had to make a large quilt right off the bat! Like hand quilting and piecing, applique, curved piecing, free motion quilting... You get my drift! bethnrog@gmail.com
