Back to School

Little Red Schoolhouse
Quilt of the month for September
(from Prairie Children & Their Quilts)

An antique Schoolhouse Quilt I bought several years ago. It's a little frayed here and there and patched in places but these types of quilts are so rare. I love it very much just the way it is but perhaps will try to restore it someday.

September always means back to school time. Even for those of us who are not school age anymore. Quilters go to school too and I know many of you take quilting classes. The latest thing appears to be video classes on your computer,  taken at your own convenience and leisure.

Today I am offering two of you a chance to enter a giveaway here for a crafting class. Take a look at Daily Craft TV.  They have some wonderful video classes taught by popular, experienced teachers. And there are not just quilting videos either -  there are classes on knitting, crocheting and scrapbooking  as well.

There are many classes to choose from. So here's how it works - you can enter a comment here on my blog and then when I pick the 2 winners they will be e-mailed an access pass code to get into the class of their choice for free. Simple. The hard part is going to be following directions carefully. Listen good.

In your comment, tell me one of your memories from when you first started school. What was it that really sticks in your mind that made you either love or hate school? Try to keep it short.

 +  =  +  =  +  =  +

I had a love-hate relationship with school. I loved learning and playing school with my friends was a favorite game. I always did well in class but I was a very shy, anxious little girl and being at school all day, away from my mom, was difficult. Some teachers were mean and did not understand and just told me to grow up when I cried or got a stomach ache while others - like dear Mrs Riccio and later Mr Hollander - understood. They nurtured me and became my friends and because of them I went on to become a successful student. Compassionate teachers hold the key I believe. My son is a teacher now and I know he understands and is one of those nurturers himself.

Good luck to everyone!  Include some way for me to reach you (e-mail) in your comment. Winners will be posted in a few days. Maybe as soon as Monday.  I know you're all eager to go back to school . . . .

I loved school too - at least as a child - not so much as a teenager. I remember always getting pictures taken on the first day and squinting into the sun! Reading has ALWAYS been my favorite thing!

I had a similar experience as you. I remember two teachers that were encouraging. My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Hegal, and my High School English teacher, Mrs. Kenyon. They emulated belief in their students, even if they were slow, they would be given a chance. That is what makes for a good school memory :-)

I always enjoyed getting back to school. It was always a fresh start with another year to "get it right". Fresh notebooks, freshly covered text books (with paper grocery bags) and the lovely aroma of freshly sharpened pencils stashed away in the pencil box. I can almost hear them clanking around now...

Love that miniature quilt and the antique one as well! Thanks for a chance to win one of their classes! So exciting. Sadly my most prominent childhood memory is being spanked the first day of kindergarten because I was missing my mom... The principle of the strict school I went to spanked me :( But I went on to get a Bachelor's degree! Yipee :) Kathi kathibc@yahoo dot com

Love the Little Red School House quilt. So very cute.
I mostly loved school- some things not so much. I loved new school supplies and how good it felt to complete an assignment.

My earliest memories of school are walking to my Montessori school at about three years old while my mom pushed my little brother in the stroller. They'd come back to pick me up at the end of the day. I think the ritual of it made it feel very important and special, and I loved school from then until I was finished with college.

I am the youngest of a family of six kids, so I never knew if the teachers were going to love me or hate me.... LOL I always enjoyed school either way and would love to win one of these on line classes. Karen/IL meandyou1974@sbcglobal.net

I loved school although my sister tells me that my mother once found me hiding in the kitchen closet with coat & bookbag. Guess I suppressed that memory. LOL Would love to continue my education with a class. Thanks for a chance to win.

I liked school as summer break was too long and boring. I enjoy going back to school even more in my older years learning new techniques/crafts.

I always loved school; I still love to learn new things. In grade school, I remember having to write about "what I did on my summer vacation." Definitely easier the years we took a summer trip to visit family in Chicago!

My first memory of school comes from one of the first days when I wet my panties during class - I didn't know that you could ask the teacher to go to the bathroom! In spite of that, I mostly loved school and became a teacher.

Because my birthday was in the middle of the year I started school when I was 4 1/2yrs. I remember my first day at school, because the teachers wore very strange and scarry clothes! They were nuns, and the first one I met had glasses, but one of the lenses was frosted, but I could see under the lense as I was looking up at her, and noticed that she had one eye missing, there was a big hollow with lashes in it, and for a little kid that was was most frightening thing I had ever seen! Having said that she was actually a very kind old lady, her name was Sister Bernard!!

Doniene said...

Thanks Kathleen, for the wonderful giveaway!! We lived in rural southern Wyoming and the school didn't haven kindergarten. (I'm dating myself!! LOL) Therefore, I was 6 1/2 when I started school, I wore a royal purple dress with a white lace collar and refused to get on the school bus to go home because I didn't know the driver! But, Mr. Morrow, the principal took me home and all ended well!

I loved my 6th grade geometry teacher. She also taught us about wildflowers and gave us a tour of her garden. Truly remarkable woman.

I grew up in a home situated on a hill, far from my friends. I loved school because there were new friends to make and old friends to greet. I loved the new pencils and of course my delight was the crayons! The big box of 64 colors was the ultimate. Oh.. and i loved to pick a new lunch box every year to start things off right... My earliest memory of school is writing my "J" backwards and my teacher being very impatient with me. I started kindergarten at age 4 1/2. Now we know that is developmental. It didn't damage me for life! LOL

In elementary school, we had the lovliest principal, Mrs. Omar, who always looked beautiful with a smile and hello to everyone that crossed her path each day. She always wore a cinch belt and full skirt. Her tiny waist even got my attention. She always wore jewelry and she smelled so good - and the high heels were so tall! Mrs. Omar's smile made me look forward to coming to school each day just to have her make me and many others feel so special!

I loved school. The best part was new school clothes! I lived in a neighborhood with a lot of children and we all walked to school together. My first teacher was s young lady who had just finished college and really excited about teaching. We reconnected years later when I was an adult. I loved getting my children ready for the first day of school, getting supplies, choosing just the right outfit and new lunchbox. My daughter is an elementary teacher today.

What a fun give-away! I loved school, mostly because I got to go with my two older brothers and not be the only one at home :) My first teacher, Mrs. Tooker, was so nurturing and she made each day special. I loved buying new outfits for the first days so much that I continued that tradition when I became a teacher ;) amatlock1@ymail.com

I hopped on the school bus with my looney tunes
lunch box, and was escorted to my classroom by
my older brother, (who needless to say did not
want anyone to know he had a little sister), left
to the awe of my teacher who seemed to be 8 ft
tall. To have snack time with milk and crackers
and then nap time under the tables. It's times
like those, that seem to stay in a persons memory forever.

An only child living in the country, I was so shy in first grade (no kindergarten there) that I had to stay after school and chat with the teacher about ANYTHING to bring me out of my shell. I only remember doing this once and told her all about my cat. :-)

Kathy...thank-you for offering this giveaway!

I don't remember my really early years of school...2nd grade is the year I can first really remember...I had a wonderful teacher-Mrs. Snow. 4th grade was my hardest year-had a male teacher for the first time, and he wasn't the nicest teacher. Plus the school was crowded, and our classroom was in a trailer behind the school....I can though remember the spelling bee we had in that classroom, all lined up around the inside of the trailer. I came in 3rd place.

I mostly loved school and loved learning. What I didn't like, and still have a hard time doing is doing presentations in front of a large group-the classroom. Had more than butterflies in my stomach!

We kept in touch with my 2nd grade teacher for years and years and years, I don't remember what about Mrs Hobbs touched my heart, but obviously did.
We still keep in touch with my DD's kindergarten teacher - she loves to hear about what she is doing with her life. She's 25 so I guess we've "known" her for 20 years!

I have always loved school and it is because of my cousin Joyce. She is 3 years older than me, and so she decided to "teach" me what she learned in school. Not sure how much I learned, but it sure was fun. I felt like such a "grown-up". Then when I went to first grade, I had the most wonderful teacher - Mrs. Killian. And, she gave me a real love for school.

I loved school! I remember getting my "first" kiss in kindergarten. I was on the swing set and one of the boys in class came over an gave me a big smack on the cheek. Wonder what ever became of him? He was awfully cute back then! :P

I think my earliest memory of school was having a part in a play. I worked so hard to remember my lines, but when the time came to say them, I missed my cue. I remember being poked in the side by a classmate and finally realizing that all were waiting for me to do my part--soooo embarrassing!!!

I started school when I was 5 years old. I did not go to kindergarten, but straight to first grade. When my teacher, Sister Mary Joseph, was teaching us to write, she always came by my desk and turned my paper in the direction opposite of how all the other children had their paper. "No, Carol. You do it this way." As soon as she walked to the next student, I'd look at all the other kids and turn my paper back in the same direction they had theirs. Poor Sister, she was so patient. She finally gave up on me & left me to my own devices. Did I ever notice I held my pencil in the "wrong" hand? Nope. But how I wish now that I had followed her advice & learned how to write with the paper positioned correctly for a left handed person!

I was very excited to go to school and sit in class with papers and books all around me. I couldn't wait. The first day came and I had to walk to school holding my older brother's hand. I was happy and didn't mind walking even though it seemed like we walked miles and miles and it took forever to get there. However, once we got to the school yard and I saw the line of big yellow busses, that was the way I wanted to get to school... in a bright yellow school bus. I couldn't understand why I couldn't ride the bus to school. From then on I hated walking to school and watching the other kids ride by on the bus. Once I walked into the red brick school the school busses were forgotten there was so much to learn.

I attended a small one room village school in England where one teacher taught all the children from ages 5 years to 11 years old. I loved school from my very first day as the older children would often help us younger ones with learning numbers, letters and reading. The only source of heat in the school room was a Coal stove that our teacher had to top up every hour through the winter months.

I attended a small parochial school in Maine. At a very young age probably first-second grade I was caught with a snowball in my hand ready to throw it. We used to build snow forts and have snowball fights. Throwing snowballs was not allowed! I received a good smack across my open palms with a ruler..ouch. Never forgot that...I was too scared or stubborn to cry. Not a good memory but definitely a lasting one!

There are too many fond memories of school to mention I guess. Elementary school was in our town so I got to walk most days to school. I couldn't wait until junior high so I could ride the bus to the school in a nearby town! Most of my taechers I remember fondly. Thanks for a chance to win- I Have one of your books that I received as a birthday present. Robin rnoel57@gmail.com

I remember my first and second grade teachers and how they encouraged and nurtured me. They were kind and positive. My third grade teacher almost did me in, though. We figured out later that she really preferred boys to girls, and was downright mean! It took a lot to overcome the effects of that year, but the rest of my elementary school years were great!

I remember being so afraid - I'm still really shy - and finding other scared faces to sit with. It didn't take long to have friends. I was fortunate that so many of us stayed in the same area and went through junior high together. I've always loved to learn so school sat well with me. Only one meanie - third grade teacher - Ms. Powell - spoiled the learnng.

Ah, I loved school too but like yourself, I was very very shy. I only remember one horrible teacher, my second grade teacher Mrs Hall. She swatted me in front of the class once for stepping over my desk, instead of walking around it to sit down. I was horrified to say the least! After her, God blessed me with some pretty awesome teachers. Now my son is marrying a school teacher :)
