When the Going Gets Hot

When the weather gets hot, the hot get to a beach.

Lake Michigan has some of the best beaches. Beautiful, clean and serene. You can always find a few without crowds. But Shhh, don't tell anyone.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. Voted  "Most Beautiful Place in America" by Good Morning America.

Living and growing up in Illinois, on the other side of the lake, this was the first I heard of the legend of the Sleeping Bear Dunes. I thought all of my bear-loving quilting friends would appreciate this story. You know who you are . . .

I didn't try it myself but I talked to a guy who said it took him 5 minutes to get down the steep sand dune and almost an hour to climb back up.

Princess Lia prefers Lake Michigan beaches to salt water beaches. No sharks.

Of course, I made sure we took the quilt barn tour.

Traverse City, Cherry Capital of the World, has the Best Cherry Pie ever. I had to try it several times to make sure  . . .

Gotta love dog-friendly towns and restaurants.

It felt great to be "unplugged" for awhile . . . .

I'll get to all those unread e-mails in a bit. Doll Quilt Club patterns for August will be mailed out sometime next week.

  3. We just got back from a trip around Lake Michigan. Beginning in Silver Lake and ending in Manitowac, WI, then back home to Coal City, IL. I love Silver Lake. I would love to have a place up there to go to every weekend and at least 3 weeks during the summer. Your pictures reminded me of our trip! Enjoy! Laura V. ninepatch@hotmail.com

And I agree about the beaches-no sharks!! I live in MA and sharks make the news almost every night.

  6. Carol, you are the lucky one. Sharks or no sharks, I would give my right arm to live in MA or anywhere else in New England . . .

  7. What lovely photos of a lovely place, it's like I was almost there. The beautiful water, quilts on barns, flowers and the pastry...good idea to sample it several times to make sure it was good, I find that works for me, too! Beth C

  14. What beautiful photos in our USA and thanks for sharing with us. For ten years we went out to Notre Dame for baton twirling competitions and one year we took a side trip over to Lake Michigan and waded in the waters. So true, not a sole around. Waters extend forever. I live in Connecticut and New England is also a beautiful area with lakes and oceans to swim in.

  16. So glad you enjoyed your time on my side of 'The Lake.' Love spending time up north in Michigan. The small towns along the way to the Dunes and Glen Arbor are some great friendly towns. So glad you were able to relax, enjoy, and recharge. Stitching and watching the Olympics here in West Michigan.

  18. My mother grew up in Maple City, MI, and I remember going there once as a child. The sand on the dune was HOT and I remember mother hovering over me, thinking I might "fall off". Loved the area!

  19. Oh, you're making me miss Michigan! I spent a lot of summers near Sleeping Bear - the dunes were so fun to climb as a kid, but I wouldn't recommend it to an adult! And the cherries! I still love them. Sounds like you're having a wonderful vacation!
