October Gave a Party

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came.

It rained all weekend and I stayed inside to work on my Dear Jane blocks. It's been too long since I last picked them up.

It's fun to check the blocks off the list and note my progress. I still have a very long way to go . . . . but feel proud nonetheless.

I keep a special basket full of larger scraps, set aside just for this quilt.

My goal was to finish 50 blocks by the end of this year. I've made 48 so far and I think I will not only complete that goal but maybe even add a few more. I'm feeling optimistic, even though there are 169 blocks, 52 triangles and 4 corner "kites" in the quilt, LOL. Crazy? Maybe. Ideally, I not only would like to finish the quilt before I die but also have a few years to actually enjoy looking at it, basking in its glory. I told my family that I plan to have a stipulation put into my will that if the quilt is not finished, someone else in the family MUST finish it and pass it down. (Extreme eye roll from my daughter . . . ) What a legacy, huh?

There is another Maple Leaf Swap running on my Yahoo group right now. I still have tons of blocks from the last one in 2010.

I've finished one project using some Maple Leaves.

I have so many blocks - I think it's time to make another. Wonder if I can somehow incorporate blue. . .

  6. Great little maple leaf quilt! Love the colors! Your comment about your daughter having to finish your quilt if it never gets done reminds me of what I tell my mom all the time. 'Don't finish all your quilts, 'cuz I want to work through my grief by working on one of your projects!' I know, it's morbid and all that, but it makes us smile.:)

  10. Kathy, May I ask are you hand or machine piecing your DJ? I just saw the original DJ for the second time a couple of weeks ago while on vacation. It is much more vibrant in person. It is a real inspiration. I love all your quilts and always look forward to seeing what you are up to. Thanks!

  11. Dear Anonymous - Thank you. I use a combination of methods. Some of my blocks are machine pieced and some hand pieced and the appliqued ones are hand appliqued. I have not done many foundation paper pieced ones yet - need to spend time honing my skills a little there. Wish I could see the original! It's on my bucket list.

  15. I continue to think about making the Dear Jane quilt - it takes me a long time to decide. We were in Vermont recently and I wanted to see the original quilt, but when we went to the museum, it wasn't on display yet. I was so disappointed! I did buy a poster of it though. Your blocks look wonderful! The maple leaf table runner is lovely too.
