I hand quilted the center with diagonal lines and then stopped. I often get stumped by how to do the borders of my quilts. I recently became motivated to finish when Cindy from The Stencil Company e-mailed me to suggest a stencil giveaway here on the blog. Maybe this will help motivate some of you to finish up the quilting on your quilts as well. Quilting with stencils is so much fun and if you're making small quilts with me it's a pretty simple way to finish them. I have a nice variety and use the small stencils in some of my small blocks and also the border stencils at times when I get tired of straight-line stitching.
It seems that some of you like to hand quilt your small quilts just as much as I do because when I wrote about one stencil in particular that I liked to use for my borders, many of you contacted the company to buy the same stencil. Remember this quilt? And the simple Wave stencil I used in the borders? I blogged about it here . I will sometimes use the same stencil to quilt my sashings.
The Stencil Company and I are holding a Free Stencil Giveaway here on the blog every month. Is that cool or what?? About every month or so I will choose a stencil for you to use for hand quilting your quilts and then demonstrate it on a quilt. All you have to do is post a message and I will choose 3 lucky winners every month.
This month - starting today - we will be giving away the Rick Rack stencil -
Look how cute it is!
And easy too. Use the stencil to mark the lines with your favorite tool - a washable fabric pen or a quilting pencil, whatever. Your choice. Then just quilt on the lines and erase or wash them out when you're done. I'll try to show you what it looks like when I'm finished.
I used my new Sewline marking pencil with green lead.
And even if you don't win a stencil this time, you can still order them directly from the company. To make it easy for you to find the stencils I like to use for my small quilts, click here. (Look at that - they created a special page just for my Sentimental Quilter followers (you)). These are just some of the stencils that I think are fun to use to quilt your small quilts.
Wouldn't a quilt block look cute quilted with this one??
To win your free stencil, go ahead and finish this sentence: "When I'm not quilting, I am . . . ." Post a nice creative message and we'll see what happens. And remember to keep it clean, please. Some of us are old ladies . . . .
I'll choose a winner sometime next week. Remember to give me your name and a link to your e-mail or blog so I can notify you. This is important. I get upset when some of you ask me a question and then do not leave me an e-mail address so I can respond. There will be another stencil giveaway next month too so keep checking back to see which one is next and if I can keep up with all the hand quilting. I'm telling you, quilting with stencils is going to be so much fun!

Poor guy he is definitely a keeper. Love your idea on the wave stencil, purchased it a couple years ago after seeing your post about it.
Now I think I really need to purchase that ric rac one. Seriously, when not quilting, i really enjoy gardening and listening to music. Somehow all of the rest of it, cooking, cleaning laundry all fill in the empty slots. LOL
When it's not raining I am probably outside pulling weeds or better on a hike. I love to watch wildlife and look at trees and vines which give me some ideas for quilting. My execution is another topic!
ReplyDeleteIf it is raining I get to work on destashing. Retirement for HB is coming soon and I have cut down to quilting and cross stitch years ago but there is that dress fabric, crafting reduced to a box or two, Christmas and holidays are not blocking my way to the lower attic and my two drawer file cabinet of whims...so on rainy days I often go out and pull out a "what if" and either kit it or ....start a new project, alternating with UFO's
My biggest lament is not devoting more time to hand quilting. All types of stitchery has been part of my life since early twentyies. So I am a bit too hard on myself when I hand quilt. Mini stencils and the small quilts are more fun for me. Nuuk said, eh?

We live in the Willamette Valley where the climate is great for both goats and gardens, and of course we have abundant rain, giving me an excuse to go inside and pursue my quilting passion. DeleteWhen I'm not quilting, my husband is sleeping! Our basement is divided long ways in half - one half is the laundry and shop, and the other half our bedroom and my sewing room. He's an early riser and I'm a nightowl, so I spend late mornings and afternoons until I have to cook dinner down there sewing. When I'm up here, I'm doing those "have to" things like cooking and a bit of cleaning and bookwork, and reading blogs and e-mails on the computer. The rest of the time I do handwork in my recliner while listening to TV in the evenings. I love your blog and the small quilts - they are my favorites! It's almost all I do anymore. They are so cute! And I love hand quilting so the stencil would be really nice! Judy in OR - mominami@msn.com

When I am not quilting, I am despeately trying to keep from pulling my now gray hair out over some wild mountian escapade my Beloved Son has concocked to try and drive his poor ole' Mommy insane with while he's enjoying texting his best buds, playing whatever today's flavor of music is, reveing up his precious old Ford Truck, and turning up the bass, rattling the house windows, smoking up the driveway with antique Ford sludge, and admiring pictures of his Sweetheart on his cell phone. Wish I was on his list of sweethearts, instead it's his girlfriend, or his truck. Me, I'm wandering the halls of the house maoning, and looking for my rotary cutter, and wondering if in my state of mind, it would be considered a dangerous weapon.

ReplyDeleteI just recently found this group and can't wait to start a small quilt. Finishing a t-shirt quilt of a young Marine who was killed last Nov at age 21. He was raised by a guardian from age 12. I knew the parents both mentally challenged so I wanted to do something special for his guardian. Then a couple of months ago his State Trooper car was hit by a truck after driver fell asleep. His car was thrown into a concrete median and caught fire. With the Grace of God he was pulled from car and in critical condition. It just so happened an EMT truck was going by and he was given CPR and medical attention. For weeks it was touch and go but now Lowell is in rehab and doing good. I would have had it done sooner but I find vacations kill my quilting mood. Now to put it on the quilting frame. Want to get it done by July 4th. Then I want to do a Small quilt.

When I am not quilting I am reading about quilting, either on blogs or in actual books. I am constantly looking through quilting magazines and books adding patterns to my bucket list of quilts to make before I die. Not much else takes precedence so mayby I have to admit that I am a quilting and fabric addict.

All weekend I could not quilt as I had to fold 1,000 envelopes for our Quilters' Guild calendar. The printer wanted to charge for extra time taken...oh no, I'll do that and save money. As a reward,I'm going to have a day of quilting this week, and a ready meal too, so I can sew uninterrupted, hopefully..

ReplyDeleteWhen I'm not machine piecing, I'm love do doing hand work in several forms. Like redwork, applique, handpiecing & handquilting in the evenings. I enjoy it best when sitting next to my sweetie, stitching, relaxing & watching TV. I'm always look for ways to add some piazza to my little quilts on a budget where quilting is such a luxury that I get overly happy just buying a cheap spool of thread. I would love to be a winner for this wonderful stencil. Thanks for the Chance Kathy.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am not quilting I am either at work (must to earn money) or at sea (my greatest passion, but quilting is getting very close to that). Angela

When I'm not quilting, I'm piecing a new quilt, planning a new quilt, or virtual fabric shopping with my sister!! She lives in Arizona, and I'm in Indiana. We get on the phone, then visit the same websites to get each others opinion on fabric, patterns, or check out blogs together. This is the MOST fun thing to do when not actually quilting!! It helps if your sister is your best friend, but a bff would do nicely too!
