Book Giveaway

I know I have never really gotten into giveaways on my blog like a lot of other quilters. All of you have followed me despite that and I have to say I appreciate it. That's going to change this week as I morph into a nicer, more generous, less whiny version of myself. Don't be too disappointed - My first giveaway will not be your usual gift  of a brand spanking new item. No, sorry, but almost as good, I think.

I was cleaning out a bookshelf in the basement while looking for some of my gardening books and I found a copy of my first book - American Doll Quilts - that's now out of print and is very hard to find.

It's slightly damaged on the back cover - but the front and inside is perfect. I can't remember for sure, but I think it got damaged a few years ago when I was about to mail it out to a customer and the glue strip on the padded envelope stuck (like Glue, duh!) to the book and try as hard as I could, I couldn't remove it without damaging the back cover. So I sent her a clean one and tucked this one away thinking no one would ever really want it. And maybe no one does.

Here you can see it - there's a strip of icky, sticky gummy stuff along with couple of scratches where I tried to remove it with no luck. I thought I'd let the lucky winner remove it herself or maybe just live with it the way it is. It's still a delightful book containing 16 patterns for little quilts and not bad for a first book. I get asked about whether I have extra copies all the time.

Many of you who've been following me for awhile probably already have a copy (it went out of print in 2009) but this is great for those who may have just discovered my books and want to see the early patterns where I couldn't sew a straight line if my life depended on it, LOL.

To enter: All you need to do is post a "creative" comment using these 3 words: Scraps, Crazy, and Blue. Like this: "I'm going to go crazy if  I don't win this giveaway and will be very blue if I don't get to make a doll quilt from my little scraps soon." Or: "You're Crazy, Kathy! Who would want this book with the blue cover full of quilts made from your silly scraps??"  Just like those Spelling lessons we had in the fourth grade where you had to use 20 words in sentences. We're all getting older now and this will be a very good exercise for you to think a little and possibly generate some new brain cells . . .

I will use a random number generator to pick the winner. I'm thinking there may also be some small giveaways of fabric for runner-ups - those 2 or 3 who post the most creative comments that make me laugh without being insulting. Be sure to leave your e-mail address so I can contact you if you're the winner.  Giveaway ends on Wednesday, March 9 and comments will close at 10:00 pm CST (when I turn off my computer and go to bed). Good luck! Winner will be announced sometime Thursday. And I promise I'll have more special giveaways like this one in the coming weeks.

  2. I'm going crazy with all the scraps in my studio! But you can help me...just send your American Doll Quilts book to me! You wouldn't want to see a fellow quilter blue, would you?

  3. Well, I'm not too fond of blue, but I would be crazy not to try making a scrappy quilt from your book out of red, or green, or yellow, maybe even orange.

  4. Make sure you follow the "3-words rule" or your comment will not be accepted . . .

    1) I have bags of scraps that I insist I am going to use "someday";

  28. What a great give-away. A little hint on removing the sticky stuff, try using some pure eucylyptus or lavender oil on a cotton ball and gently work over the sticky area, you will find that the oil will slowly dissolve the glue. It does work, I use this method sometimes when I have taken a price label off a book that has left a sticky residue.
I would be crazy not to try and win a copy for a blue friend who loves scrappy quilt books!

  29. A little bit of goo on the back cover of blue won't make me crazy, I love to sew with my scraps and this book would be perfect to me!

  30. You may think I'm CRAZY to enter your giveaway because I already have a copy of this book, but I'd really like another one to donate to my quilt group's lending library. I just made the little red-white-and BLUE shoo-fly quilt from this book. Kathleen, if you look at your Flickr group, you can see the picture of it.The blocks were made completely out of SCRAPS, and when I needed fabric for one of the borders, I used pieces from a cut-up shirt. Thanks for the giveaway. I already thought you are pretty nice, even without it.

  109. People called me CRAZY when I started my very first quilt a few month ago because I have a habbit of starting things and not finish them. But that's in the past! This quilting is really my thing and for this first quilt I choose the colors brown and BLUE because it fits so well in my house. I already made a little christmas quilt and have started now with the MQ from Veronique.
As you can imagine I don't have a lot of SCRAPS yet, but since I never can throw away something... this will change very soon I think LOL. This marvelous book looks great!!! And who cares about the damaged back? I think I won't see the back of the book a lot, because I will keep looking inside! :-))
Thank you very much for the chance of winning this!
Have a nice day, jolanda from the Netherlands

  120. This is a bit of a story. A friend on twitter is interested in Underground Railroad quilts, so I told her I had a few books and would let her know. I pulled out your book Prairie Children and Their Quilts.I was drawn to the BLUE Friendship Star Quilt.I'm very sentimental. As I was looking for other books by you I saw The American Doll Quilts book. I immediately went to Amazon, but they had one copy for 74.. I then made a CRAZY search of the used books stores on the internet, no luck. So I went to the publisher, who directed me to your website. I sent off an email hoping I might be able to get a copy of the book. I saw that you had a blog, so here I am. I cannot believe you are giving away a copy! I have been collecting vintage SCRAPS for years. And doll quilts too. I am so glad to have found a connection in the blog world.

  123. I once bought some fabric to make a blue quilt. Every time I went into a store, I wound up buying more blue fabric for that quilt. I might have been crazy having a self imposed limit on buying new fabric, because now that my quilt is pieced, I have enough blue scraps to make five more queen sized quilts!

  127. I'm not crazy thinking I'll win a blue book using scraps. It might just happen. Or how about - I've never made a blue crazy quilt from scraps. Or - I'm teaching my young granddaughter to sew like crazy using scraps of her favorite color - blue. Or my friends thought I was crazy when I made a quilt from scraps during my blue period. (The quilt is blue - not me.) Should I keep going? In other words, I'd love to win the book but I'll stop now.

  171. Hey Kathy! Thanks for doing this giveaway. I don't think I am as crazy as some of the other commenting quilters. But I do have plenty of scraps that I continue to keep stored away for projects that require a smaller cut than the average quilt. Many of my scrappy pieces are indeed the color blue, and would be used a lot quicker than the rest of my scraps, since blue is my favorite color.

I hope the random number generator likes me, it doesn't seem to so far, but I still have hope! :)

  185. I am a beginner to this quilting game, a lovely friend showed me the basics and off I go to make a quilt or see what I now know. I begin to think a queen size bed may be an ambition to grand and mabey a dolly quilt, she would understand. But all of the patterns I seem to find are far to big. Small is hard to find. I would be so pleased to give these a go and a little glue stain wouldn't make me say no.
